Money: The Great Motivator
Lewis Lapham argues that there is a great “American faith in money.” Others may argue that it is not just Americans, but people in general that have faith in, a want of, a need, for money. It is not just the fact that money signifies wealth, security, and prosperity. The reason people do this is because money signifies something else.
For some reason the human brain desires power. The holding of power acts similar to a drug. Testosterone is released into the body when people are given positions of power, and in turn, dopamine is increased in the brain’s reward pathway. Very similar to a drug, more and more power is wanted, and because money signifies power, the cause for greed is evident.
